How to Inspect a Roof from the Ground

You probably already know that you should have your roof inspected regularly. However, there may be times when you need to find out what’s happening on your roof quickly and safely without calling in the professionals. Learn how to inspect a roof from the ground, and you can get the information you need.

How to Inspect a Roof from the Ground

Roof inspections can help you spot roof issues before they lead to problems and can ensure your roof is in good working order throughout its lifespan. A thorough inspection should be a job for the professionals, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be watching your roof at other times. Do you know how to inspect a roof from the ground?

When Should I Inspect My Roof from the Ground?

Roof inspections should always be a part of your home maintenance plan. Ideally, it would be best to have your roof inspected by a qualified roofing professional once a year, typically during the spring. However, there may be times outside of a planned inspection when you’ll need to be able to spot roof damage quickly:

  • After an adverse weather event like blizzards or sustained heavy winds
  • If you spot water damage on your ceiling, walls, or other areas that can indicate a roof failure
  • If you see evidence of roof damage, like loose or missing shingles

In these instances, figuring out whether your roof has been compromised is essential. It might be tempting to climb up there yourself, but remember that being on a roof can be dangerous, especially if you don’t have roofing experience. In addition to the risk of falls or other injuries, if your roof is structurally unsound, walking on it could cause additional damage. You can get the information you need by learning how to inspect a roof from the ground instead.

How Can I Do It?

To inspect your roof from the ground, you’ll need to start by going outside and walking around the perimeter of your house. Use binoculars if you like. You will want to see your roof from as many angles as you possibly can to help you spot warning signs of damage:

  • Visible mold or other evidence of rot
  • Moss or debris from adverse weather events
  • Loose or missing shingles
  • Cracks, holes, or dents in roof hardware
  • Buckles or divots in the roof’s surface
  • Damage to the chimney or air vents
  • Bent, broken, or missing gutter hardware

If you see evidence of damage, take a photo to share with a roofing professional. You can also use a ladder if a higher vantage point would be helpful, but observe ladder safety and avoid getting on the roof itself.

Once you’ve inspected the outside of the roof from the ground, it’s a good idea to check the inside by venturing into the attic. Look for evidence of water damage or other issues that indicate a compromised roof, and take photos of anything you see.

What Do I Do Next?

While a visual inspection can help you identify issues that need attention, it won’t help you spot everything. Some types of roof damage are difficult to see from the ground or can only be identified with roofing experience. Use the photos and evidence you’ve compiled to start a conversation with a qualified roofing professional, and they’ll be able to tell you how to proceed.
