How to Insulate a Roof

Did you know that an insulated roof can save you up to a fifth of your average heating bill? You can lower your energy costs and keep your family comfortable in the chilliest temperatures. Learn how to insulate a roof, and you’ll be happy you did when winter comes.

How to Insulate a Roof

According to the US Department of Energy, an insulated roof can save a consumer up to 20 percent on their average winter heating bill. Insulating your roof is good for the environment too, as lower energy consumption will also lower the carbon footprint of your household. If you’re a homeowner, it’s a good idea to learn how to insulate a roof.

How Does Roof Insulation Work?

Roof insulation has two important functions. First of all, it helps keep the temperature of your home stable despite changes in the weather. This leads to the heating cost savings described above. Secondly, it stops moisture from damaging your roof by preventing condensation and humidity.

Can I Handle This Job by Myself?

While installing insulation can appear simple from the outside, it does require a lot of specialized knowledge in order to do it correctly. Insulation must be installed extremely carefully so there are no gaps for air to sneak through. It also requires knowledge of local building codes, and technical roofing information like R-values and climate conditions that can affect the overall performance of the insulation. If you want to make sure the job is done right, it’s best to work with an experienced roofing professional.

Types of Roofing Insulation

When it comes to the process of actually insulating a roof, it largely depends on the type of insulation you select for your home. This is one of the reasons it’s a good idea to work with an experienced roofer. They will be able to examine the space you are trying to insulate, look for any existing issues with the roof, and recommend the most efficient type of insulation for your particular situation. Here are some common types of insulation, and the process required to install them:

Spray Foam

Spray foam is one of the most common types of roof insulation. A roofer will spray polyurethane foam directly on the underside of your roof deck, filling in all of the cracks and crevices and protecting your roof from unexpected air flow. This is a popular type of insulation because it is relatively simple to apply, extremely effective in controlling temperature, and doesn’t deteriorate in the way some other insulation types do. However, it can also be among the most expensive roof insulation options.

Loose Fill Insulation

For this type of insulation, a roofer will blow loose fiberglass or cellulose insulation directly into the hard-to-reach places within your roof. This is a great option if access to your roof is hindered somehow, as it can be applied with a long tube instead of direct contact. Fiberglass loose fill has the upside of being fireproof, but inhaling it can be dangerous for your lungs. It’s also less reliable in extremely cold temperatures. Cellulose is more temperature-resistant, but it is also flammable, so it may not be appropriate for all roofing situations.

Insulation Rolls

Insulation rolls, or “batt blankets,” are the most common form of insulation in roofs. These are blanket-like rolls of fiberglass that can be unrolled and placed directly below your roof deck, and also into the susceptible nooks and crannies of your attic. These are the simplest insulation option, though they have the same issues as fiberglass loose fill and should be handled with care.

Foam Board Insulation

This insulation consists of rigid foam boards that can be placed under your roof deck and also used to fill any other gaps on your roof. Roofers like these because they are durable and can be cut to any size as needed and then placed directly where they need to go without additional labor. However, they are not waterproof, so they may require some kind of water protection to remain useful.
